The backbone of the INFO-SCAN system is the database and its associated management and maintenance functions. The INFO-SCAN system makes extensive use of data-driven functions to allow the maximum flexibility in tailoring a specific system to the needs of the user. The multitude of capabilities offered by the INFO-SCAN system are not hard coded but are available for use on a point-by-point basis and are selected via the database. The database contains parameters that represent all available options for each point type and these options are selected when a point is generated into the database.

The database is not limited to telemetry points; it contains data pertaining to virtually all the functions available to the operator. Access to all points in the database is by English names, facilitating easy access.

Database creation and generation is supported with a database generator that allows the user to define the structure of the database and to supply the initial parameters that define the initial set of points contained. The key feature is that the database is flexible and does not require redesign to accommodate resizing or restructuring.

The man-machine capability of the INFO-SCAN system provides the facility for day-to-day modification of the parameters within the database. Via this capability, the user performs the normal data-parameter review, modification and tuning of application parameters required by the process system. This facility is provided through the "point review" capability of the system.
